Key Types of Car Chassis

Monocoque / Unibody: The body and frame are integrated into a single unit, providing better safety and lighter weight for most modern vehicles.

Ladder / Body-on-Frame: A traditional, robust design consisting of a separate frame holding the engine/drivetrain and a body mounted on top, popular in trucks and SUVs.

Backbone Chassis: A strong, rectangular tubular structure connects the front and rear suspension, commonly used on some sports cars and specialized vehicles.

Space Frame (Tubular): A lightweight chassis composed of a network of tubes for high structural rigidity, often used in race cars and exotic sports cars.

Semi-Monocoque / Semi-Space Frame: Combines features of monocoque and space frame structures for increased rigidity in specific areas.

Platform Chassis: A subtype of the ladder frame or backbone chassis designed to support various types of bodies.

Skateboard (Automotive Platform): A modern, flat chassis design containing all mechanical components, common for electric vehicles (EVs), designed to have various bodies ("top hats") mounted on top.

Cutaway Van Chassis: A frame without a complete body, designed for custom rear bodies, such as in ambulances or delivery trucks.

Superleggera: A technique using a lightweight frame with aluminum tubes, usually covered with aluminum bodywork.

Exoskeleton Car: A design where the frame is exposed on the outside of the vehicle.
