A car engine is a complex machine converting fuel into power through several key components: the cylinder block (housing), piston (moving up/down), crankshaft (converting linear to rotary motion), and camshaft (controlling valve timing). These parts work together to create combustion - pulling air/fuel in, compressing it, igniting it, and exhausting gases. 

Core Engine Components

Engine Block (Cylinder Block): The structural framework housing cylinders, pistons, and the crankshaft.

Cylinder Head: Sits on top of the block, housing valves and spark plugs.

Pistons: Move up and down to create pressure and power.

Crankshaft: Transforms vertical piston movement into rotational force.

Camshaft: Controls the intake and exhaust valves, timing them to open/close at specific intervals.

Connecting Rod: Links the piston to the crankshaft. 

Valvetrain and Timing

Valves (Intake/Exhaust): Control the flow of air-fuel into the chamber and exhaust out.

Timing Belt/Chain: Synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft.

Valve Springs: Hold the valves closed. 

Fuel, Ignition, and Lubrication 

Spark Plugs: Ignite the air-fuel mixture in gasoline engines.

Fuel Injectors: Deliver fuel directly into the combustion chamber.

Oil Pan (Sump): Located at the bottom, storing oil for lubrication.

Oil Pump: Circulates oil to minimize friction. 

Support Components

Intake/Exhaust Manifold: Manages air entry and exhaust gas exit.

Head Gasket: Seals the engine block and cylinder head, preventing leaks.

Water Pump/Radiator: Circulates coolant to manage engine temperature.
