The intake camshaft is equipped with two eccentric mechanisms that decrease and increase the angular speeds of the cam profile as they rotate, depending on the degree of depression of the accelerator pedal and the load. A decrease in this speed while the valve is open corresponds to an increase in the duration of the valve opening, and vice versa. Each of the two mechanisms is responsible for two cylinders, while the camshaft is made composite (one inside the other). The displacement of the eccentrics occurs with the help of worm mechanisms, which are driven by electric actuators and an additional composite shaft located in the block head above the camshaft. Hyundai says the CVVD engine delivers 4% more power, 5% better fuel economy and 12% less emissions.
